Rare Marilyn Monroe car service receipts to be auctioned

Bonhams & Butterfields will be sending some rare Marilyn Monroe memorabilia across the block on June 16 as part of its Entertainment sale in Los Angeles. Among the items up for bids will be a group of car service receipts from the summer of 1962 that document where Monroe's chauffeur drove her over the course of several evenings.

A total of ten dates are accounted for between May and June 1962 from the Carey Cadillac Renting Co. receipts, and detailed drivers notes highlight the location of every stop made during the trips. Included are notes regarding where Monroe went on what would be her last birthday -- an evening that she was widely believed to have spent alone until now. The receipts show that Monroe was driven between Dodger Stadium (for a promotion she was doing), "Chasen's Home," La Scala, the Studio, and ultimately her home on the evening of her 36th birthday, June 1st, 1962.

Monroe films to be featured at festival

ONE OF HOLLYWOOD'S top legends is the star of the Blackhawk Food, Wine and Film Festival on Thursday at the Blackhawk Automotive Museum. Sponsored by the Danville/Sycamore Valley Rotary Club Foundation, the event will feature some of the classic films of the late Marilyn Monroe. Adding to the fun, a Marilyn Monroe impersonator will be available for photo ops.

The mystique of Monroe lingers, decades after her death in 1962. She seemed to have everything to live for — superstardom, talent, beauty, sex appeal, wealth — yet purportedly committed suicide at the relatively young age of 36. The mysterious circumstances surrounding her death and her relationships with President John F. Kennedy, Attorney General Robert Kennedy and her famous husbands, Joe DiMaggio, baseball great, and Arthur Miller, renowned playwright, only add to her celebrity.

So "... that's the "films" part of the festival. The food and wine can be enjoyed from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., along with a silent auction. Food samples from 20 area restaurants and tastes from more than a dozen Livermore Valley wineries will be available. A live auction takes place from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
