"Marilyn Monroe: Still Life," Jan. 30, PBS

When a 20-foot cutout of Marilyn Monroe -- in her trademark upswept-dress pose from "The Seven Year Itch" -- loomed over Broadway's Times Square in 1955, the Legion of Decency wanted it taken down.
The anecdote may be apocryphal, but it's included in "Marilyn Monroe: Still Life," filmmaker Gail Levin's unique spin on the life of Hollywood's most iconic sex symbol. It will be rerun as part of the "American Masters" series on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 10-11 p.m. EST on PBS (check local listings).
The story of the bit player who became more famous than she could have dreamed, with husbands and lovers from the world of sports, the arts and politics, has been recounted endlessly. While other documentaries have explored the films in which she starred, no one has looked at her work in front of the still lens, a body of work -- in hindsight -- as significant as her movies.

Marilyn Monroe was one of Richard Burton's lovers

A new biography of the late Richard Burton has revealed the Hollywood actor had an affair with Marilyn Monroe. Burton's affair with Elizabeth Taylor - who he went on to marry - has been well documented but it is now claimed the star first cheated on his wife Sybil Williams with Monroe. The book titled Richard Burton: Prince of Players is written by the actor's former publicist Michael Munn who insists Burton's liaison with the Gentleman Prefer Blondes star occurred at the beginning of his career - before he met Taylor on the set of Cleopatra in 1963. Penny Juror, who has also written a biography of Burton, insists there could definitely be truth to the rumours. She says, "I think any affair Burton might have had is credible. He was very promiscuous. He made it a rule to try and conquer any leading lady that he had in the early days. "Clearly Marilyn Monroe would have been a target for him because she was the sex symbol of Hollywood at the time." Munn also details an affair Burton is said to have conducted with Lana Turner - his co-star in 1955 movie The Rains of Ranchipur. Burton divorced Williams in 1963 and went on to marry four more times - twice to Elizabeth Taylor - before his death in 1984.

Marilyn Monroe was the buzz of the tabloids, having just returned from singing a saucy rendition of "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy.
Photojournalist Lawrence Schiller was on the set of Monroe's new movie, "Something's Got to Give," to shoot the bombshell for Paris Match magazine.
The blonde star was supposed to only appear nude, wearing a flesh-toned top and bottom. Instead, she wriggled out of both.
Schiller snapped the photos.
Monroe looks radiant in most, delicate in others, and in some, she seems almost broken.
