Sale of large collection of Marilyn Monroe photos

Before the world knew her as Marilyn Monroe, Norma Jeane Baker so captivated photographer Andre de Dienes at her first modeling assignment that he later recorded their meeting in his diary: "An earthly sexy-looking angel! Sent expressly to me!"
De Dienes simultaneously captured the innocent exuberance and seductiveness of the young model in a series of photos that day in 1949 as she frolicked on a Long Island beach.
They are among more than 100 Monroe images being offered for sale in three sessions on Dec. 16-17 at Christie's auction house. They are expected to bring from $811,000 to $1.1 million.

Glenbow exhibit shows few fit Monroe's mould

Star's dresses were too curvy for mannequins
Don't feel bad if you couldn't imagine yourself squeezing into Marilyn Monroe's dresses--the Glenbow Museum's mannequins couldn't fit into them, either.
When the collection of dresses, called Marilyn Monroe: Some Like it Haute, arrived at the museum in advance of its opening last Saturday, senior curator Lorain Lounsberry couldn't find any mannequins with small enough waists.
Nothing would zip up.
"Our mannequins are straight up and down and have very wide waists," she says.
"Marilyn had a 22-to 24-inch waist."

The mythology of Marilyn

Marilyn Monroe: Life as a Legend and Marilyn Monroe: Some Like it Haute open today at the Glenbow Museum and continue until Feb. 22, 2009.
Exhibition highlights Monroe's enduring allure.
It's amazing, really, but there it is: Marilyn Monroe's dazzling star power has never diminished. It has only grown brighter and taken on the additional brilliance of myth.
The luminous platinum blond, whose beauty was graced by her wit, is the subject of recent magazine articles, the cover of the September issue celebrating Vanity Fair's 25th anniversary, Madonna and Britney takeoffs, Lindsay Lohan's remake of Monroe's famous "last sitting" photos by Bert Stern, countless biographies, academic papers, fan sites and blogs, a lot of contemporary art, and now an exhibition, Marilyn Monroe: Life as a Legend.
